Issue 2 August 2001
http://www.fc-crusaders.co.uk |
Well, here it is, the second information-packed issue of the FC Crusaders Newsletter – we hope the wait hasn’t been too painful for you!
In this edition, we confirm the squad numbers announced at the barbecue and tell you more about our sponsors, ADAC. We chat to our two team managers about the season ahead and list our 2001/2002 fixtures as they currently stand. Incidentally, we are particularly pleased to have arranged for Lions and Dragons to play at home one after the other on a good number of Sundays, so there is plenty of scope for the boys to cheer each other on and for parents to meet and chat in the crossover between games. We have also been able to avoid school holidays so far, although fixture backlogs may change this.
Feedback on the first issue was very positive (well, the feedback we heard, anyway). Please continue to tell us what you think. We hope the boys get to read the Newsletter too, so there is a bit more here for our younger readers this time.
You should also find the AGM minutes attached to this month’s Newsletter.

About ADAC
ADAC Laboratories is a world leader in the design, manufacture, marketing and servicing of specialist imaging equipment used by clinics and hospitals primarily in the diagnosis of cancer and heart disease.
The company has its headquarters in California and employs approximately 900 people worldwide. Acquired by Royal Philips Electronics of the Netherlands, in December last year, ADAC is part of Philips Medical Systems, a leading supplier of diagnostic imaging systems and related services that employs more than 11,000 people in more than 100 countries. ADAC’s UK operation has recently moved to Reigate.
More information is available on ADAC’s website, www.adaclabs.com.
So, if you think about it, there is a natural link between ADAC and FC Crusaders … that’s right, we’re both run by the Dutch ! (No, really, think about it … )
About ADAC
Overleaf: Profiles of Dean Hollands (yes, that’s Dean HOLLANDS !) and Roger Smith …
Who’s the Boss ?
Whether a Dragon or a Lion, you will know precisely who’s the Boss on match day. (No, not you, Roger Smith and Dean Hollands, of course !) But how much do you really know about your leaders ? Was Roger any good at football when he was young ? Did Dean really score the winning goal for Chelsea in the 1970 FA Cup Final ? How old are they anyway ? (You probably think they’re really ancient, like 25 or something.) FC Crusaders Newsletter’s intrepid reporter tracked down your team managers at the Field of Dreams after a tough pre-season training session and asked them the questions you want answers to.
Dean and Roger, thanks for taking time out of your busy schedules to tell our readers about yourselves. Dean first, what does being Crusaders’ Coach and Lions’ Manager mean to you ?
That’s a very good question and an easy one to answer – I really enjoy being involved with this Club because of the fantastic team spirit and enthusiasm of the boys and the support of the parents. The players all work very hard on their fitness and skills and I’m looking forward to success on the field and the training ground this season.
Roger, what precisely are Crusaders aiming for this season ?
It’s our first year in a new league and, in addition to some good wins for both Lions and Dragons and lots of goals, I want us most of all to enjoy ourselves and to show the opposing teams each week how to play with a smile - win, lose or draw.
Isn’t there a sportsmanship award or something, Dean ?
That’s right, the Guildford, Shere & District League awards a trophy to the most sporting team in each division and we want both teams to win those this season. Also, one of our Club awards at the end of the season will go specifically to the player who has consistently demonstrated the qualities of a true sportsman on and off the pitch.
Can you both tell me what you do with yourselves when you’re not running FC Crusaders?
(Roger) When I’m not being “Chief Dragon”, I work for Customs in London. I also enjoy running and rowing. (Dean) I’m a big fan of Chelsea and, in my spare time, I’m a policeman. That’s my job, really.
That could be useful when the Crusaders are naughty.
Yes, but thankfully, I haven’t had to arrest any of them yet. It’s a long season though, so who knows.
Dean, which current professional player do you most admire ?
Like many of the boys, I’m sure, I like to watch David Beckham’s skills on the ball, his free kicks and his passing. He has not done a bad job as England captain either. I think he’s growing up a bit now, except for his hairstyle, of course. It’s just a shame he plays for the wrong Premiership team !
Roger, if you were not Dragons Manager, which team would you like to be in charge of ?
I’d like the England job when Sven Goran Eriksson has finished with it. I’d love to help England win the World Cup one day. Maybe I’ll be able to select some Dragons players for my team.
Dean, I suppose you want the Chelsea job.
Si, signor. Parliamo molto bene italiano.
What ?
(Dean) Never mind.
Roger and Dean, who are the stars in your teams ?
(Both) All the boys are stars because they work so hard at their game. Some will shine from time to time, of course, but there is no reason why everyone should not take home the Man of the Match trophy at some point during the season. Goalscorers, solid defensive tacklers, creative passers, brave keepers and sportsmen will be equally recognised.
Roger, did you play soccer when you were at school ?
Yes. Next question !
Dean, I have to know, did you score the winning goal in the 1970 FA Cup final against Leeds United ?
I wish. But, believe it or not, I was only a boy myself when Chelsea won the Cup in 1970.
So Dean and Roger, just how old are you ? …25 ?…26 ?
Almost. Let’s just say we don’t qualify to play mini soccer any more !
BARBECUE ENJOYED BY ALL
The afternoon of Sunday 15th July saw an excellent turnout, despite the variable weather conditions, for the FC Crusaders “kit launch and squad number draw” party in the grounds of Surrey Police HQ. Thanks to Maria Hollands and Haidee Shead, constant supplies of hotdogs, burgers and drinks were on offer and, as if that were not enough, there was a specially made football kit cake too. Through Sandra Bateup’s fantastic organisational effort and the generosity of those attending, a raffle raised £78.00 for Club funds. Thank you !
Dean and Roger, aided by Penny and Jeremy Hutchins, finally managed to get all 24 boys into their new kit – no shouting, just motivational coaching – and the red and black crusade was ready to begin. The lads ran out of the club house to a thunderous reception from the parents (as well as from the distant sky). Everybody applauded with pride as the colours were trooped before the gathered throng. (Some of us became quite poetic !) Photos were taken of the squad and of each team and Ian Lee took individual shots of each player for the website player profiles, of which more later in the summer.
The draw for each player’s squad number went without a hitch (see front page for results) and, from among the passionate and avidly attentive under-10 audience, Shreyas came forward to take the coveted number “10”. He has much to live up to with greats such as Pele laying claim to that shirt number in seasons past.
Then, there was time for games of football and rounders before the tired lads took their equally tired parents home to bed.
A big thank you to everyone who was able to come for helping to make the afternoon a success. Huge thanks to Dean and Maria particularly for their hard work in preparation and on the day. We hope to hold regular social gatherings and your response this time was very encouraging.
Penny is arranging for the kit to go back to the supplier shortly for surnames and numbers to be added in time for the first league matches of the season. If you spot any mistakes in the squad list, please let her know – NOW !
